Joanna Manc

Joanna Manc (* 1959 in Gdynia/Poland) is a translator of Polish literature into German, an interpreter and a poet. She lives in Frankfurt am Main.¹

Career

Joanna Manc was born in Gdynia/Poland in 1959 and lived with her grandmother when her mother emigrated to West Germany. She followed her at the age of nine.² ³ She studied German, Romance and Slavic studies at the Goethe University in Frankfurt and worked as a foreign-language secretary at the Deutsches Polen-Institut in Darmstadt, with which she still collaborates today (as of 2023).⁴ It was through her work there that she came to translation.⁵ In 1991 she went to Athens and Rhodes for two years to teach German there, to work for a German publishing house and to train at a dance school for professional dancers.⁶ ⁷ ⁸ During this time she published her first poems in the Polish cultural magazine Borussia, later also in the magazine Kultura, an exile magazine for Poles published in Paris, and in a German-Polish anthology.⁹ Manc writes her own poetry and prose in Polish and German.¹⁰ ¹¹

Since 1994 Manc has been translating Polish literature into German.¹² Her work as a translator focuses on Polish children’s literature and on prose that deals with the recent German-Polish past.

In 2006 Joanna Manc received the Förderpreis des Europäischen Übersetzerpreises. In accordance with the prize regulations, the main prizewinner Renate Schmidgall nominated Joanna Manc for the Förderpreis (promotional prize).¹³

In 2010 the author Włodzimierz Nowak was awarded the Ehrenpreis des Georg-Dehio-Buchpreises for his reportages; together with him, his translator Joanna Manc was honoured, “who brought the reportages into German brilliantly and congenially, thereby opening them up to German-speaking readers as well”.¹⁴

From January to March 2015 Manc was Translator in Residence at the Europäisches Übersetzer-Kollegium in Straelen.¹⁵

Memberships, voluntary engagement

Manc is a member of the Frankfurter Literaturclub der Frauen aus aller Welt e. V.¹⁹

In 2018 she was one of the co-signatories of a letter of protest by German-speaking translators and mediators of Polish literature addressed to the Polish government, which was directed against Polish censorship and the controversial so-called Holocaust law. Other signatories included Renate Schmidgall, Dorothea Rein, Dorota Stroińska and Marta Kijowska, among others.²⁰
