BücherFrauen e. V.

BücherFrauen e. V. (Women in Publishing) is a professional association and network for women from all areas of the book and media industry in the German-speaking world.¹ ² The network was founded in Munich on 23 November 1990.³ ⁴

BücherFrauen see themselves as a network that connects women from all areas relating to books and adjacent media – regionally, nationally and internationally. They bring together employees and freelancers, women starting their careers and those in leadership positions. The association was founded by feminists and has since campaigned for the equality of all genders and gender identities. BücherFrauen members work for the network on a voluntary basis and support one another through the exchange of professional information and personal contact. BücherFrauen also offer further training and qualifications and take positions on issues of women’s policy and industry policy. They stand for an open-minded and diverse society and oppose all forms of discrimination and group-focused enmity. History

The founding of BücherFrauen e. V. is closely linked to the Women in Publishing (WiP) party that has taken place at the Frankfurter Buchmesse since 1981. There, women from the book industry in Germany, Austria and Switzerland came together, inspired by the model of the English Women in Publishing. This event laid the foundation for an association that aimed to empower women in the book industry and connect them with one another.⁷

In 1992 the first BücherFrauen address directory, known as the Blaue Buch (Blue Book), was published; from 1994 onwards it was reissued every year for the Leipziger Buchmesse. A first logo was also presented that year. A year later the first newsletter appeared, conceived by Heike Wilhelmi and Evelyn Kuttig. It kept members informed about the association’s work and current industry topics and was published twice a year from then on. In 1994 BücherFrauen presented themselves with their own stand at the Leipziger Buchmesse for the first time and published their first survey of salaries and fees. Organisation and structure

BücherFrauen is organised on grassroots-democratic principles. The network thrives on its members, who decide on annual themes and activities in the regional groups and working groups. The general meeting and the extended board set the framework for regional and national involvement. The board represents the network vis-à-vis partners. In the extended board, it is supported in annual project planning by representatives of the regional groups and working groups. The board is elected every two years at the annual conference in November.³¹ The board currently consists of the cultural manager Yvonne de Andrés (chair), the literary and specialist translator Juliane Seifert (deputy chair), the freelance editor Annett Geselle (secretary) and the editor and translator Carola Köhler (FinanzFrau, treasurer), supplemented by Inka Bankwitz and Verena Schmidt (press relations) (as of December 2025).³²

Political work

BücherFrauen are politically active for equality in the cultural sector and take positions on issues of women’s policy and industry policy, including through invitations to the Bundestag Committee on Culture & Media. They also campaign for women authors to be nominated for the Friedenspreis des Deutschen Buchhandels. 5 to Watch!

In 2025 BücherFrauen, together with The Female Publisher, the network for women in publishing and programme management, launched the “5 to watch” initiative. The idea for the initiative came from Anne Friebel (Palomaa Publishing, founder of The Female Publisher), Josefine Podei (editorial trainee at Seemann Henschel), Regina Denk (publisher, author, publishing consultant), Isabell Schumann (author, publisher, copywriter), Marianne Eppelt (managing director of w_orten & meer and chair of BücherFrauen), as well as Inka Bankwitz (online PR and marketing manager at medialike GmbH, press spokesperson for BücherFrauen) and Jona Neugebauer (illustration, design and management of the BücherFrauen Instagram account).⁴⁸ The aim is to honour five diverse voices from the book industry on the basis of their outstanding achievements, their innovative strength and their commitment to the future of the book industry.⁴⁹ ⁵⁰

In 2025 the following five people were honoured as “5 to watch”:

Valo Christiansen: editor, presenter, freelance author and slam poet; offers specialised sensitivity readings for autistic people, people with ADHD, non-binary and queer people, as well as advice on gender-sensitive communication.⁵¹
Alina Gries: editor and author of children’s books intended to introduce preschool and primary school children to environmental topics in a playful way and to foster their creativity.⁵²
