The Deutsch-Iranische Beratungsstelle für Frauen und Mädchen e. V. (German-Iranian Counselling Centre for Women and Girls, DIB) is an institution for the care and support of Persian-speaking women and girls, based in Frankfurt am Main. On 8 March 1982, International Women’s Day, a group of Iranian and German women founded the Autonome Iranische Frauenbewegung im Ausland, which acts as an umbrella organisation for women’s groups from all political camps.⁶ The group came together in response to the compulsory veiling of women in Iran, which had been decreed there by Ruhollah Khomeini after the fall of the Shah in the course of the Islamic Revolution in 1979.⁷⁸⁹ The movement’s aim was the care and support of Persian-speaking migrant women, refugee women and girls in the Rhine-Main region. Alongside Iranian women, women from Afghanistan also found a place in the movement; they likewise fled to Germany from 1979 onwards: initially from the military conflicts between the Soviet-backed central government and the US-backed Mujahideen, and later from the oppression by the radical Islamic Taliban after the withdrawal of the Soviet troops.

Working Methods and Budget

The DIB is embedded in a network of various women’s projects in the city of Frankfurt am Main which are funded by the Women’s Department. The focus is above all on questions of residence and asylum law, psychosocial problems, relationship problems, domestic violence, questions of upbringing, family and generational conflicts, problems with authorities and institutions, career orientation, health counselling and sexual orientation, ageing in exile, as well as the questions faced by girls growing up between German and Iranian or Afghan culture. In order to do justice to this diversity of topics, the DIB works in a network with many other projects and institutions, such as the Women’s Department of the City of Frankfurt, FIM, the Office for Multicultural Affairs and the autonomous women’s shelter, as well as with various specialists to whom the women are referred where necessary.³⁰³¹
