Ika Hügel-Marshall

Ika Hügel-Marshall (*1947 in Bavaria; †2022 in Berlin)¹²³ was an Afro-German activist, author, lecturer and artist. In her books and essays she addressed the topics of racism and feminism and the Black women’s movement. Her paintings and graphic works were shown in exhibitions in Germany and the USA and can be found on various book covers.⁴⁵⁶

Career

Ika Hügel-Marshall (née Erika Maurer) was born in 1947 in Roth in Bavaria as the daughter of the white German Katharina Mader, née Maurer, and the African American US soldier Eddie Marshall. Her father had to return to the USA before she was born. It was not until 1993 that she succeeded in finding him in Chicago.⁷ Until the age of seven, Hügel-Marshall lived with her mother and her grandmother. At the urging of the authorities and church institutions, she was then placed in a children’s home far away.⁸ Her years there were marked by traumatising experiences, but also by survival strategies.⁹

Despite massive experiences of discrimination, Ika Hügel-Marshall obtained her secondary school leaving certificate (Realschulabschluss) and trained as an educator. She got a position in a children’s and youth home in Frankfurt am Main, where she was initially employed full-time and, during her studies of social pedagogy, part-time. After graduating, she again worked full-time in the home in order to reform it in many respects together with an Afro-German colleague.

“Together we managed to turn a ‘custodial institution’ into a child-friendly home. We reduced the number of children and young people from 60 to 30 and converted their accommodation into various residential groups.”¹⁰

During this time she was married to Orlof Hügel for six years. For a while she ran her own wool shop in Frankfurt am Main. There her artistic abilities found expression in imaginative knitting patterns. After twelve years as an educator, Ika Hügel-Marshall sought a new challenge and began working freelance as press officer at the Orlanda Frauenverlag in Berlin. It was there, too, that her life partnership with Dagmar Schultz began.

Women’s movement and Black feminism in Germany

Ika Hügel-Marshall had already become politically active during her studies. At first in white feminist groups, in which racism, however, was not an issue, and then together with her taekwondo trainer and friend Sunny Graff as co-founder of the diverse martial arts association Frauen in Bewegung e. V. in Frankfurt am Main.¹¹¹² There, in the mid-1980s, she also made her first contacts with the newly emerging Black movement in Germany. A milestone was her encounter with the African American activist and poet Audre Lorde, whom she met shortly after her move to Berlin and the start of her work at the Orlanda Frauenverlag, and with whom she was henceforth connected by a deep friendship. Lorde encouraged Hügel-Marshall to write her autobiography Daheim unterwegs – Ein deutsches Leben, which was also published in English in the USA in 2001.¹³ Reading tours took Hügel-Marshall not only to numerous German cities, but also to England, Namibia and the USA. In Germany she organised readings with Audre Lorde. She is one of the co-authors of the script for the film Audre Lorde – The Berlin Years 1984 to 1992 (2012).¹⁴

In Berlin, Hügel-Marshall established close contacts with ADEFRA (Afrodeutsche Frauen – Afro-German Women)¹⁵ and was connected by a personal and political friendship with the Afro-German activist and poet May Ayim.¹⁶ She herself published essays in beiträge zur feministischen theorie und praxis and other publications and, together with her partner, the white lecturer and publisher Dagmar Schultz, and other women, edited the anthology Entfernte Verbindungen. Rassismus, Antisemitismus, Klassenunterdrückung.

Ika Hügel-Marshall held teaching assignments at the Freie Universität and the Alice-Salomon-Hochschule in Berlin, where, for example, in 1992 together with May Ayim and Dagmar Schultz she conducted a survey of white university lecturers on racism, antisemitism and ethnocentrism in teaching and research.¹⁷ She also offered self-assertion courses for Black, Jewish and migrant women.

In addition to her publications and her political engagement, Ika Hügel-Marshall worked freelance as a counsellor for Black Germans, parents of Black children and people with a history of migration.¹⁸ As an artist, she collected dead wood in the forests in order to create living sculptures from it. Her colourful pictures adorn not only book covers but also postcards, stools, notebooks and much more. She did not live to see the exhibition Viele Farben zwischen Schwarz und Weiß, which she had helped to plan, held from 17 June to 13 August 2022 at the Begine in Berlin. Ika Hügel-Marshall died suddenly and unexpectedly on 21 April 2022.

Memberships, voluntary engagement

Ika Hügel-Marshall was a founding member of the women’s martial arts association Frauen in Bewegung e. V. in Frankfurt am Main and an early member of ADEFRA e. V. In 2021 she became a board member of the Berlin association Gleich und Gleich, which supports trans young people.¹⁹
