The Kinothek Asta Nielsen e. V. was founded in 1999 as a feminist initiative in Frankfurt am Main. The association of film lovers is dedicated to the rediscovery, archiving and presentation of the film work of the New Women’s Movement.¹ Through its cooperation with cinemas, other cultural and film institutions and international filmmakers, and through the film festival Remake. In August 1999 the twelve founding members of the Kinothek Asta Nielsen e. V. – all of them film lovers, film curators, film historians and film theorists, film students, filmmakers and critics⁴ – put the proposal to open a women’s film archive to Frankfurt’s municipal politics.⁵ Initially this archive was located at the Institute for Theatre, Film and Media Studies on the Campus Westend of Frankfurt’s Goethe University, where the founders Heide Schlüpmann worked as professor of film studies and Karola Gramann as a research associate.⁶ Further founding members were Eva Heldmann, Doris Kern, Prof. Dr. Heike Klippel, Prof. Dr. Martin Loiperdinger, Wilhelm Roth, Stefanie Schulte Strathaus, Maria Wismeth, Susanne Nickel, Sabine Glathe, Brigitte Schulze.⁷⁸ Since December 2009 the Kinothek Asta Nielsen has been located on the 6th floor of Stiftstraße 2 in Frankfurt’s city centre.⁹

Under the title Einladung zu einer Reise – L’invitation au Voyage, in 2002 the Kinothek Asta Nielsen staged a retrospective with an international symposium on the work of the French director, screenwriter and film theorist Germaine Dulac (1882–1942), in collaboration with the cinema of the Deutsches Filmmuseum, schauspielfrankfurt and ZDF/Arte.¹⁹ In cooperation with the Freunde der Deutschen Kinemathek Berlin, issue 93 of the series Kinemathik appeared: L’invitation au voyage: Germaine Dulac.

The board of the Kinothek Asta Nielsen has included, since 2013, Martin Loiperdinger, professor of media studies at the University of Trier, since 2000 Heide Schlüpmann, former professor of film studies at the Goethe University Frankfurt am Main and co-editor of the journal Frauen und Film, and since 2014 Maria Wismeth, co-founder of the Filmtheater Mondpalast and of the political-philosophical journal Fragmente.⁴⁰

From 2006 to 2018 the film scholar and curator Karola Gramann was the artistic director of the Kinothek Asta Nielsen. From 2018 she headed the Kinothek together with the film and cultural studies scholar Gaby Babić.
